7 Reasons Jiu-Jitsu is Great for Kids

gracie barra scottsdale brazilian jiu jitsu kids classesPracticing jiu-jitsu provides many benefits to kids, and enrolling your child in jiu-jitsu may be one of the best choices you ever make for them. If you’re deciding whether or not jiu-jitsu is right for your child, let us tell you seven reasons why jiu-jitsu is great for kids.

1. Jiu-jitsu keeps kids healthy.

Childhood obesity is a problem that our society faces, attributed to unhealthy food and inactive lifestyles. With television and technology so available and addicting, kids can easily become accustomed to them.  It’s best to break these habits early and get children to learn the importance of a healthy lifestyle. These lessons will help them the rest of their lives. Jiu-jitsu provides kids with a safe way to exercise while learning a skill.

2. Jiu-jitsu builds confidence.

Its hard to determine where confidence comes from. What we do know is that it can be obtained. Kids with more confidence will do better in school, and in life. Jiu-jitsu naturally builds a child’s confidence. As strange as it sounds, theres just something constructive about submitting an opponent that is euphoric and confidence-boosting.

Martial arts are known to build confidence, but jiu-jitsu also develops humility. Jiu-jitsu students are often humbled by the abilities of their peers. Submitting others can build confidence, as mentioned before, but this comes after countless times of being on the receiving end. These experiences build humility and appreciation.

4. Jiu-jitsu develops discipline.

Jiu-Jitsu teaches all of its students to never give up and to keep pushing forward. The ability to focus and stay on track is something everyone needs to develop when studying jiu-jitsu. This skill can be learned from jiu-jitsu, but applied in all aspects of of life.

5. Jiu-jitsu teaches kids how to defend themselves.

In a perfect world, no one would ever need to learn how to defend them self. Unfortunately, we don’t live in a perfect world, and situations can arise where people get too aggressive. Knowing how to defend yourself from an aggressor is an important life skill that provides value throughout your child’s life. Jiu-jitsu is a proven self defense system that can effectively show kids how to defend themselves in a time of need.

6. Jiu-jitsu helps kids make friends and socialize.

Making friends is an important part of being a kid. Learning to interact with others and working together are critical to early childhood development. Jiu-jitsu is not an individual sport, and you can’t practice it alone. The members of your school are your teammates, not your opponents – who become your lifelong friends.

7. Jiu-jitsu is a lot of fun.

Probably the most important reason that kids should learn jiu-jitsu is that it is fun. In jiu-jitsu, kids not only have an outlet for their energy, but also have fun while practicing it.

Not all kids enrolled in jiu-jitsu will stay. The chances of someone starting at 5 years old for making it all the way to black belt is incredibly rare (unless your last name is Gracie). Regardless how long you stay in jiu-jitsu as a kid or as an adult, you will surely take away a positive experience that you will remember the rest of your life.

About the Author: Patrick’s love for martial arts began early on in life.  He was greatly influenced by pop culture and the desire to mimic figures he saw on TV.  This sparked his love affair with combat sports and the culture behind it.  He obtained a BA in History from California State Polytechnic University Pomona and wrote his senior thesis on the development of Martial Arts within the United States.  During this time, he practiced Karate, eventually receiving his black belt under Sensei Ray and Shawna Ginocchio in 2011.  Soon after achieving his black belt in Karate, he began training in Brazilian jiu-jitsu. Patrick is currently holding a purple belt under Professor Rafael Olivera and trains out of Gracie Barra Chino.  In addition to training in jiu-jitsu, Patrick attends California State University Fullerton for his MBA.  He hopes to one day use his experience, education, and passion for martial arts to develop a rewarding career.
